Online applications are faster and need a digital photo of at least 600 × 750 pixels. The tool exports 900 × 1157 pixels, which keeps the 35 × 45 shape and stays inside the 50 KB to 10 MB file size limits.
The background rule is different from the US: plain light grey or cream, not bright white. The tool sets light grey for UK photos, and you can switch to cream or white with the swatches if your wall is close to one of those.
Paper applications need two identical printed photos. Someone who knows you has to sign the back of one if you are applying for a first passport.
How to take the photo
Find a plain, light wall
Stand about half a metre in front of it so your shadow falls behind you, not on the wall around your head.
Face the light
Daylight from a window in front of you works best. Avoid overhead lights that cast shadows under the eyes.
Have someone take it at eye level
The camera should be about 1.2 m (4 ft) away, level with your eyes. Leave space above your head and include your shoulders.
Crop it here
Add the photo above, check that the top of your head and your chin sit on the red lines, and download.
Tips for this document
- Have someone else take the photo; you can't take a selfie for a UK passport.
- Keep your hair away from your eyes and take off glasses if you can.
- Make sure there are no shadows on your face or behind you.
Common reasons photos are rejected
- Correct
- Head too small
- Head too large
- Head tilted
- Shadow behind
- Busy background
Printing your photos
Download the print sheet and print it at a photo shop, a pharmacy photo counter or at home on photo paper. Choose actual size or 100% in the print settings; “fit to page” shrinks the photos and they will be the wrong size. Cut along the small corner marks so each photo measures exactly 35 × 45 mm.
Questions people ask
Can I take a UK passport photo at home?
Yes, for online applications. Ask someone to take it against a plain light wall in good light, then crop it here.
Can I wear glasses in a UK passport photo?
It's best not to. If you must, there can be no glare and the frames can't cover your eyes. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are never allowed.
How big is the head in a UK passport photo?
Between 29 mm and 34 mm from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
