How to print passport photos at the right size

Download the print sheet, order a standard 4 × 6 photo print with cropping turned off, and cut along the marks. Always print at 100%.

The easiest way to print passport photos is a single 4 × 6 inch photo print with several photos on it. It costs very little at most pharmacies, supermarkets and photo shops, and you can cut the photos out with scissors.

Step by step

  1. Download the print sheet

In the tool, choose “4 × 6 in photo print” and click “Download print sheet”. It places as many photos as fit, with corner marks for cutting.

  2. Order a 4 × 6 print

Upload the JPG to a photo kiosk or a store's photo website as a standard 4 × 6 print. Choose glossy or matte, whichever the document requires; most accept either.

  3. Turn off cropping

If the service offers “auto crop”, “fill” or “border” options, turn them off. The sheet is already the exact 4 × 6 shape.

  4. Cut along the marks

Use a ruler and a craft knife or sharp scissors. Each photo should measure exactly the size your document asks for.

Printing at home

Use photo paper, not plain paper. In the print dialog, set the paper size to 4 × 6 in (or A4 if you chose the A4 sheet) and the scale to 100% or actual size. “Fit to page” shrinks the photos and they'll be too small. After printing, measure one photo with a ruler before cutting the rest.

Check the size

A 2 × 2 inch photo should measure 51 mm on each side. A 35 × 45 mm photo should be 35 mm wide and 45 mm high. If it's off by more than about 1 mm, the printer scaled it; print again at 100%.
