A bad photo is one of the most common reasons DV entries are disqualified, and you won't find out until results are released. The rules: a square colour JPEG, exactly 600 × 600 pixels, no larger than 240 KB, head between 50% and 69% of the image height, plain white or off-white background.
Every person on the entry needs their own photo, including your spouse and each child, even babies. Group photos and old photos are not accepted, and using the same photo as a previous year's entry can disqualify you.
How to take the photo
Find a plain, light wall
Stand about half a metre in front of it so your shadow falls behind you, not on the wall around your head.
Face the light
Daylight from a window in front of you works best. Avoid overhead lights that cast shadows under the eyes.
Have someone take it at eye level
The camera should be about 1.2 m (4 ft) away, level with your eyes. Leave space above your head and include your shoulders.
Crop it here
Add the photo above, check that the top of your head and your chin sit on the red lines, and download.

Questions people ask
What happens if my DV photo is wrong?
The form may refuse the upload. If it accepts a photo that breaks the rules, the entry can be disqualified later, even if it is selected.
Do children need their own DV photo?
Yes. Every family member listed on the entry needs a separate photo that meets the same rules.
